Atman
Colour of Fear
ATMAN is a three-part memoir and philosophical journey inspired by true experiences across Australia, China, and India — exploring filmmaking, identity, mental health, spirituality, love, and the search for truth in an increasingly fragmented world.
Written over many years from 2008 and drawn from real events within the international film industry, the trilogy follows filmmaker James Vegter as his pursuit of creative success gradually transforms into a deeper exploration of consciousness, culture, trauma, human behaviour, and self-discovery. Blending cinematic storytelling with philosophical reflection, ATMAN moves between the external world of film sets, cities, relationships, and artistic ambition, and the internal world of memory, perception, healing, and meaning.
The series is envisioned not only as a collection of books, but as the foundation for a long-form international television drama series. Combining the emotional realism of a character-driven memoir with the scope of a global psychological drama, the adaptation aims to bring the world of ATMAN to screen through a visually immersive and deeply human narrative spanning multiple countries, cultures, and timelines.
At its core, ATMAN explores one central question:
Who are we when art imitates life in our relationships, identities, and stories we create?
